Chapter 12

Sunny Lane Trailer Park was only a few miles from the upscale neighborhood where Kaneshia's parents supposedly resided, where she reportedly grew up. But it was like the neighborhoods were an entire world apart. Kaneshia's friend, Jasmine, the dead girl, had lived in the trailer park for as long as she could remember. Through Jasmine's eyes, life had always been easy for Kaneshia.

But Jasmine saw her life as different, very different from Kaneshia's. Jasmine considered her life an ongoing struggle. Struggling each and every day was something she'd been born into but determined not to die with. She'd dreamed of beating poverty, a fear that crippled most. But the thought of poverty gave her energy, almost inspiring. It was a special kind of strength. A strength she realized lived within, giving her the power to conquer the monstrous condition. That's what she lived for every day. She woke every morning ready, looking forward to another day's fight against poverty. Her strength was like that of a true warrior. And victory was in sight until that awful night.

Caroline Paul's new trailer was exactly what she and her daughter, Jasmine, had dreamed of owning. But both overlooked the price her daughter would have to pay for its ownership.

Sitting on the edge of her easy chair was something Caroline hadn't done since her brother had died years ago, killed in a drive by, a case of mistaken identity, another Friday night tragedy. Now this, her only child murdered.

Two large watermelons and several yearbooks sat on the floor near Caroline's feet. She browsed through the books, only stopping to sharpen knives and smell her daughter's bath robe, soft and sweet, like the young woman who had worn it.

Caroline held the light pink robe tightly, close to her chest, lifting it and sniffing. Then she placed the robe on her chest and turned another page, looking at a picture. Jasmine's senior picture stared back at her, smiling. With shiny skin, hair even shinier, and teeth so bright no one could help but notice her smile, Jasmine held a red rose against her cheek. Its stem barely touched the tiny gold cross hanging from her neck.

Leaving the yearbook open, Caroline leaned it against her chest, over the robe. She held the annual in her arms, spread across her bosom like she'd held Jasmine when she was an infant. As she embraced the book, squeezing it this time, Caroline gently swayed her body while tending to the tip of the knife's blade. Then she closed the book after noticing Jasmine's smile.

The doorbell rang. Certain of who was on the other side, Caroline stood, placed the knife by a watermelon, walked to the door, and without looking through the peep hole, she opened it. She glanced up and gasped. “It's you. What are you doing here?”
